Our History

In 1982, 2 new concentrations were formed which called Company Hygiene and Occupational Health and Nutrition. In 1991, Occupational Health concentration was taken out from the post graduate program with several considerations, then joined the post graduate program of Health and Occupational Health. Subsequently, the nutrition program was also taken out and formed as a new program as the program itself more orientated on the clinical problem thus making limitation in recruiting participants to doctors.

Later on, four concentrations were established in order to anticipate the increasing needs of more applied and integrated knowledge that would work in sync with medical science in the era of globalization. These four concentrations, Immunology, Medical Reproductive Science, Transfusion Science, and Oncology, are coordinated by several FMUI departments. Currently, MPBS FMUI is developing two more concentrations, Bioinformatics and Stem cells, which will offer emerging knowledge and latest technology to engage with the industry 4.0.

Administratively, this study program has undergone several changes. Firstly, this specific study program was under the Faculty of Medicine University of Indonesia and become a stepping stone for University of Indonesia to establish post graduate faculty. However, the post graduate faculty was then removed making the P3S IKD as a part of Post Graduate Program of University of Indonesia. With the issuance of Government Regulation number 30 of 1990 concerning 2 lines of higher education, namely profession and academics; the Basic Medical Program was developed into the academic path and was renamed into Biomedical Science Program. The change of name was contained change in paradigm and definition. In 1999, all Post-Graduate Study Programs that could be included in faculties within the UI were returned to their respective faculties. Post-Graduate Study Programs now only manage interdisciplinary program. At the beginning, the study programme managed and provided education at Post Graduate Level in Biomedical Sciences at the FMUI which constitutes master’s degree and doctorate. Starting from 2000, in accordance to the instruction of FMUI Dean, management of master’s and doctoral programme was separated, thus each programme is managed by the respective Head of Study Programme. The programme name was changed to “Master’s Programme in Biomedical Sciences” (MPBS).

In line with the development and in accordance with a paradigm shift, there was also a change in the composition of the program participants. In the early days, the participants were teaching staff from Basic Medical Science (commonly called “preclinic”) from several Faculty of Medicine in Indonesia, public and private university. Even the first batch of participants came from FKUI itself. In addition, most of the participants in the first period were doctors. Further development showed that more teaching staff asides from faculty of medicine were interested in this study program such as Biology, Pharmacy, and even Chemistry from FMIPA around Indonesia. Looking from these past few years, the latest data has indicated that most (more than half) of the participants were the graduates from bachelor’s degree with natural science education which is non-medicine, both who had working experience and fresh graduates who would like to deepen their education for various reason and purposes.
